Scrapbookin' Subculture
Ariela Haro von Mogel September 1st, 2008
I am seriously under the impression that there is a subculture for everything. There’s a subculture to motorcycles, teeny bopper music, cupcake artistry, Ancient Chinese vase collecting, even scrapbooking. There will be always be groups of people who are really into their craft or collection that they become obsessed. There’s books written for these people.
So anyways, I got into scrapbooking. Yes, despite years of making fun of women for doing this type of thing, I am scrapbooking. I have joined the Dark Side. For years, I kept so many newspaper clippings, pictures, ticket stubs, what-have-you of Mozart. And I thought to myself, “Wait, there’s a legitimate, organized space that you can put all this stuff into, and it’s called a scrapbook.” So, I am pretty well into finishing my Mozart scrapbook, and I love it to death. Then, as people noticed my newfound hobby, I started getting scrapbooks as gifts. I have a “wedding” and “travel” scrapbook so far. That’s fine. Those are for special occassions and a scrapbook would be nice for that.financial planning software australia? Buy Propellerheads Reason 4 for Mac OS X Buy cheap PhotoShop CS 2

When I was first learning how to master the delicate art of scrapbooking, my best-friend Jie was helping me with some wonderfully creative and frugal advice. I have done a lot with her advice already. So I thought I’d get some more ideas. So I began to look at scrapbooking books (that sounded redundant) at JoAnn’s and Borders.
Wow. This was when things started getting scary.
Okay, maybe this is where different philosophies diverge or something, because I am under the impression that scrapbooks are special books, for special occasions (or a particular person you really love – like Mozart). According to almost every book I have perused, scrapbooks are for anything. They are for the overly busy person or the quintessential bored housewife. There are elaborate, wonderful pages for the most mundane activities. Someone eating a celery stick when they were 11 years old, a bake sale, a woman winking at the camera. Now, these may be special in their own right to those individuals, but I sure as hell am NOT making a crazy scrapbook page for that. That’s what photo albums are for! These activities are just way too normal for me to take that much time with them. I mean, I draw the line at a wedding, Mozart, baby and travel scrapbook (depending on where you travel). The rest can be put in a photo album. Seriously, when the little ones hit a certain age, and they are not new, fluffy cutie babies anymore – they’re going into the photo album too! You may think I’m cold hearted and that scrapbooking every photographically captured activity in your life is worth your time. Fine, go ahead. I got other things to do.

I have to admit those scrapbook guide book are addicting. I think there should be SA meetings. “Hi, my name is Jie and I’m a scrapbook addict. ( not to mention that someone I know was getting a little happy because of the glue but I’m not naming anyone I know) Someone could choose their family over it. It’s a hard decision: long hours of pasting everything you saved on pages of the life you once had before scrapbooking or human interaction? It’s one of life’s dilemmas.
